Rajiv Lochan Engages in Tea Diplomacy

As Tea Diplomat I meet with many good tea people such as Chinese Consul General Mr. Ma Zhanwu who is stationed in Calcutta and with Dan Robertson who was coincidentally also visiting our area. For this visit we were trying to identify tea plants.

A perspective that the tea bush which give quality must be DNA mapped to trace it’s origin is a talking point at various levels and CII has coined a word Tea Diplomacy which is appropriate focus to cover it.

Chinese consul general Mr. Ma Zhanwu stationed in Calcutta was on a trip to Darjeeling and we discussed this at length and visited Rungneet with Dan Robertson who was coincidentally also visiting our area and we identified the right bush.

Recently a 30 million year old tea seed fossil has been discovered in Yunnan and Prof Wang Xufeng places tea as old as 50 to 80 million years, our finding of today is going to be of serious significance.

About the Author: Rajiv Lochan is a veteran of the tea industry with over 30 years experience, mainly in the Darjeeling area of northern India. He and his family now also run the Doke Tea Garden in Bihar, India, and Lochan Tea, Ltd., a tea vendor. He is also now serving as a “tea diplomat” with tea professionals in China. His personal site.

About Mr. Ma Zhanwu

Mr. Ma Zhanwu was born in Anhui Province, China, and has MA and ME degrees. He has served in numerous government roles for China in a variety of countries, including Canada, the United States, and since 2015 in India. He is married and has a daughter.

Currently, Mr. Ma Zhanwu is focused on improving trade relations with India, including, of course, where tea is concerned. He was doing a tour of the Darjeeling tea gardens as a part of this effort.

About Dan Robertson (罗丹)

Dan is a busy guy and devoted to tea, unlike some tea vendors who just sample a tea and then set it up on their website and get the order filled through a third party (in other words, they are just a front, whereas Dan really knows tea first hand).

For over 20 years, Dan has been involved in just about every aspect of tea and has developed some strong relationships with people like Rajiv Lochan. He shares his knowledge and passion with his customers and with others who want to learn more about tea. Tea tours are a part of this. Small wonder he was on hand for this momentous occasion.

Dan graduated from the College of Wooster, Ohio, and also owns FRAMEWORK Video & Sound, an educational and documentary film production company. He is conversant in Mandarin Chinese and has studied and taught Tai Ji Quan (martial art and health exercise system) for 25 years. In the early 1990s he traveled to tea production areas and interview tea experts for a documentary.
