by Little Yellow Teapot (a tea steeping marvel and occasional contributing author)
Sample #3 of six personally selected by tea champ Benoy Thapa of Thunderbolt Tea. The foothills of the Himalayas are home to the thunderbolt, and thus this clonal tea is aptly named. And the flavor rolls on your tongue like that thunder through the clouds.
Steeped up (190°F for 3 minutes):
The dry leaves had a fruity aroma like the Muscat grapes they are said to imitate but also a slight nutty quality. The beautiful amber colored liquid had a fruity aroma, but the taste is more roasty, which should be good with milk (and yes my humans tried it that way. About the same price as the Singbulli Emperor First Flush 2015.
What Is a Second Flush Darjeeling
After that First Flush from about late February to mid April, the tea plants rest a bit and then start their second flush (period of growth). These leaves are said to yield the best flavors and are often the most highly prized. The fury to grow new leaves and the usually lower amount of rainfall tends to concentrate various elements in the leaves. The muscatel character is strongest, and more infusions are possible from the leaves.
Note: This year the Darjeeling gardens have experienced a bit more rain than usual and experienced some reduction in quality. This varies by garden, though, with this one being particularly good.
Singbulli Tea Estate Info
This garden is also part of the tea tourism craze sweeping the world of tea (as a great way to increase garden revenues). Despite being part of a larger company, the garden retains a small, independent feel and maintains top standards for its teas.
